FemJourn Privacy Policy

1. About this policy

FemJourn is a menstrual health and menopause tracking and information app operated by Femnova Private Limited, a company incorporated in India under CIN U72200MH2026PTC469547, with its registered office at 506, Building No. 1, Harminder Singh Road, Seven Bungalows, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400061, India ("Femnova", "we", "us", "our").

This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use FemJourn, why we collect it, who we share it with, where we keep it, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have.

Please read it before you agree to it.

This policy applies to the FemJourn mobile application only. It does not apply to any other website or service, including any website we may operate.

FemJourn is offered in India, is intended for use in India, and is currently available in English.

2. What FemJourn does — and what it does not do

FemJourn has two parts: a menstrual health check-in and a menopause check-in. You may use either or both. In each, FemJourn lets you:

FemJourn is a wellness and tracking app. It is not a medical service. It does not test you, examine you, or assess your health. It does not provide diagnosis, medical advice or treatment. The figures shown on FemJourn's scales are our own way of summarising your answers. They are not medical measurements and do not correspond to any clinical scale. Only a qualified doctor can assess your health.

FemJourn is not an emergency service. If you are worried about your health, or if something feels urgent, please speak to a doctor or go to a hospital.

The following are not part of FemJourn at present:

If we introduce any of these, we will update this policy and ask for your consent again before that service begins. We will not start any of them under this policy.

Subscriptions

We expect to introduce a subscription during the pilot, under which some features stay free and others are paid. You will never be charged unless you choose to subscribe, and if you do not subscribe you can carry on using the free features.

If you do subscribe, we will hold information about your subscription — which plan you chose, when it started and when it renews, and whether a payment succeeded. We do not collect or store your card, bank or UPI details. Payment is taken through the app store, as explained in section 7. Your payment details go to the store directly, not to us.

3. FemJourn is for adults only

FemJourn is for people aged 18 and above. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

You are asked to confirm your age before you enter any information into the app. If we find that an account belongs to someone under 18, we will suspend the account immediately, stop using the information, and delete it within 30 days. We keep a record that this happened.

If you believe a person under 18 is using FemJourn, please tell us using the contact details in section 13.

4. What information we collect

We only collect information that you give us or that the app needs in order to work. You do not have to answer every question — you can skip questions and still use the app.

4.1 When you sign up

WhatWhy we need it
Your mobile numberTo create your account and to sign you in
The one-time code sent to your phone by SMSTo confirm the number belongs to you
Your ageTo confirm you are 18 or above, and to show you relevant information

4.2 What you record in the menstrual health check-in

This is health information about you. It is among the most sensitive information we hold, and we treat it accordingly.

  • The dates and length of your periods, and how often they come
  • How heavy your flow is, and whether you experience leakage or staining
  • The type of sanitary protection you use
  • Pain and other premenstrual symptoms you record
  • PCOS related features such as hair growth, acne, skin changes or weight, if you complete the PCOS check-in
  • A haemoglobin reading, if you choose to enter one, and whether you have had a blood test
  • Whether your periods were delayed, if you log your periods
  • If you complete the delayed-period check-in: whether you have had sex since your last period, pregnancy test results and related symptoms
  • Whether you use a contraceptive method, and the method you use, if you choose to tell us
  • The scores and results the app calculates from your answers
  • What you told us you were hoping to get from the app

4.3 What you record in the menopause check-in

This is also health information about you, and it includes information about your mental health and your sexual health. These are the most sensitive categories we hold. We explain in section 5 exactly what we do with them, and in section 7 who sees them.

  • Where you are in menopause, and what you are hoping the app will help with
  • Hot flashes, night sweats and sleep
  • Physical symptoms — such as fatigue and low energy, joint pain, backache, etc.
  • How you have been feeling in yourself — including low mood, anxiety and difficulty concentrating
  • Urinary symptoms, including urinary leakage
  • Vaginal health — including dryness, itching, sexual desire etc.
  • Bone strength — history of fractures, any scans done
  • Any gynaecological symptoms, including postmenopausal bleeding or discharge

4.4 What the app creates from what you record

  • A summary of your answers for each check-in
  • Figures on FemJourn's own scales, which are our way of summarising what you have recorded
  • A record of your check-ins over time, with the date of each, so you can look back at what you recorded before

4.5 Information collected automatically

  • A device identifier, used to keep the app working correctly on your device and to help keep your account secure
  • Basic technical information needed to run the app and to fix faults, such as the app version and the type of device you use
  • Records of your consents, and security logs of access to our systems

4.6 You create an account before you enter anything

You confirm your mobile number with a one-time code before you can answer any question in the app. There is no stage at which we hold your health information without an account attached to it.

4.7 What we do not collect

We do not collect your name, address, email address, government identity numbers, or your card, bank or UPI details. We do not collect your precise location. We do not collect information about you from any other source.

5. Why we use your information

We use your information only for the purposes below.

PurposeWhat this involves
Creating and securing your accountSigning you in, confirming your number, keeping your account safe
Running the app for youStoring what you record, showing it back to you, producing your summaries, the figures on our scales, and your record of earlier check-ins
Showing you relevant informationShowing general information, written by us, based on the topics you have recorded
Reminders and service messagesSending the check-in reminders you have set, and telling you about changes to the app or this policy
Keeping the app workingFixing faults, preventing misuse, keeping our systems secure
Research and analytics on overall usageProducing counts, totals and other statistics that do not identify anyone — for example, how many people used a feature, what proportion recorded a particular symptom, or how this varies across broad age groups. We use these to understand how FemJourn is working, to improve it, for internal reports, and — if we seek or receive grant funding — for reports to funders. This work is done by our own team.
Managing your subscription, if you take oneRecording which plan you chose, when it renews, and whether payment succeeded, and giving you access to the paid features
Meeting our legal obligationsWhere a law requires us to keep or produce information

We do not send marketing. We only send you service messages — the check-in reminders you have set, and notices about changes to the app or to this policy. We do not send marketing, newsletters or promotional messages. If we decide to introduce these, we will ask for your separate, optional consent first, and you will be free to decline.

Research and analytics. We carry out research and analytics on how FemJourn is used. This is done by our own team, and only on aggregated statistics that do not identify you. We do not analyse your individual records for research. We do not share your information with any outside research or analytics organisation. If we decide to work with one in future, or to carry out research on individual records rather than on aggregated statistics, we will ask you separately and specifically for your consent at that time. It will be your choice, you will be able to say no, and saying no will not affect your use of the app.

What we never do: We do not sell your information to anyone. We do not use your information to advertise to you, and we do not share your health information with advertisers, data brokers, social media platforms or analytics companies.

6. Your consent, and how to withdraw it

We use your information on the basis of the consent you give when you sign up, and the consents you give for particular features.

You can withdraw your consent at any time, and it is as easy to withdraw as it was to give. You can do this in the app by using "Delete my account" under Profile, or by contacting us using the details in section 13.

If you delete your account, your consent will be considered withdrawn, and we will stop using your information. This does not affect anything we did before you withdrew it.

Because this consent covers the core purposes of the app, we will not be able to continue providing the app to you, and your information will be dealt with as set out in section 9.

If we later introduce optional features that need your separate consent, we will ask you for it separately, and you will be able to withdraw it in the app without deleting your account.

7. Who we share your information with

We share your information only in the limited circumstances set out below.

7.1 Service providers who work for us

These organisations process information on our instructions only, under written contracts requiring them to keep it secure and to use it for no other purpose.

WhoWhat they handle
Amazon Web Services IndiaHosting our systems and storing our data, in the Mumbai region
Vobiz Private LimitedSending the one-time code to your phone. This provider receives your mobile number.

At present we do not use any third-party analytics, advertising, attribution or tracking tools in the app. If that changes, we will tell you and ask for your consent before any of your information reaches them — see section 14.

Payment for subscriptions. If you choose to subscribe, payment is taken through the app store you downloaded FemJourn from — Google Play or the Apple App Store. You give your payment details to the store, under its own terms and privacy policy, and not to us. The store tells us only which plan you chose and whether the payment succeeded. If we change the way payment is taken, we will update this policy before that happens.

7.2 Where the law requires it

We may disclose information where we are required to do so by law, by a court, or by a government authority acting under a lawful power, and where necessary to establish or defend a legal claim.

7.3 If our business changes

If our business is transferred to another organisation, your information may transfer with it. We will tell you before that happens and this policy will continue to apply until you are told otherwise.

8. Where your information is kept

All of your information is stored in India. We use Amazon Web Services infrastructure in Mumbai. Our backups and disaster recovery arrangements are also held in India.

We do not transfer your information outside India.

9. How long we keep your information

We keep your information for as long as you have an account with us and are using the app.

If you delete your account, we delete everything we hold about you, except for the items below which we are required to keep:

What survives deletionFor how longWhy
A record of the consents you gave and withdrew3 years from the date of deletion or withdrawalWe are required to be able to show what you consented to
Security logs recording access to our systemsAt least one yearRequired by law
Records of any payments you made8 yearsRequired by tax and company law

These records are kept separately, are not used to contact you or to provide the app, and are deleted once the period ends.

Everything else — your check-in answers from both parts of the app, your haemoglobin entry, your summaries, the figures on our scales, your record of earlier check-ins, and your account details — is deleted.

You can delete your account at any time by writing to us at the email provided below in section 13.

The aggregated statistics described in section 5 do not identify you, and are not affected by account deletion.

10. How we protect your information

We treat what you record as sensitive, and we protect it accordingly. Our measures include:

No system can be completely secure. If a breach affecting your information occurs, we will tell you and the Data Protection Board of India, in the manner and within the time the law requires.

11. Your rights

To know what we hold. You can ask us for a summary of the information we hold about you, what we are doing with it, and the categories of third parties we have shared it with. We will provide this in a clear and readable format within 30 days.

To correct it. Since all health information in FemJourn is entered by you directly, you can update or correct it at any time in the app under Profile → Settings or by completing a new check-in. Femnova does not hold health information about you that you have not provided yourself.

To have it erased. You can ask us to delete your information, and we will do so unless a law requires us to keep it. Section 9 explains what that means in practice.

To nominate someone. You can nominate another person to exercise these rights on your behalf if you die or become unable to do so yourself.

To complain about handling of your information. You can raise a grievance with us as set out in section 12, and you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

To withdraw consent. As explained in section 6.

You can exercise these rights in the app by contacting us using the details in section 13. We will respond within 30 days of receiving your request. We may need to confirm your identity before we act on a request. There is no charge for exercising these rights.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. If we make a change that affects how we use your information, or if we introduce a new service, we will tell you in the app before the change takes effect and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent again.

In particular, we will ask for your consent again before we introduce doctor consultations, counselling services, an automated chat assistant, any research on your individual records, or the involvement of any outside analytics or research organisation.

When we update this Privacy Policy, we will update the 'Effective Date' at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

This policy is issued in accordance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the rules made under it, and the Information Technology (Reasonable Security Practices and Procedures and Sensitive Personal Data or Information) Rules, 2011.
